Canada starts a new era this season. Rogers signed a 12-year deal, worth about C$11 billion, that runs from 2026-27 to 2037-38 and covers every national game in every language, the playoffs and the Stanley Cup Final.
Where national games air in Canada
- Sportsnet: Saturday Night Hockey (the Saturday show that replaced Hockey Night in Canada on the NHL side) and other national games. On a phone, it is the Sportsnet app with a Sportsnet+ plan; the Premium plan adds out-of-market regional games.
- Prime Video: Wednesday Night Hockey, in English and French, at no extra cost for Prime members, plus two first-round series and one second-round series in the playoffs.
- TVA Sports: the French-language home, with up to 350 games a season, 32 Canadiens games, the Canadiens playoff games and the Stanley Cup Final, through TVA Sports Direct.
- TSN and RDS: regional games only, for the Jets, Senators, Canadiens and half of the Maple Leafs, on TSN+ and RDS en direct.
CBC and Citytv no longer show NHL games. The Hockey Night in Canada name now goes with PWHL games on CBC from December 5. If you used CBC Gem for hockey, you will need Sportsnet+, Prime Video or TVA Sports this season.

Tips for watching on your phone
- Data: a full game in HD can use a few gigabytes of mobile data. On Wi-Fi, or with the app set to a lower quality, it goes much further.
- Location: sports apps check where you are to apply blackouts. Keep location on for the app, or the game may not start.
- Screens at once: family plans limit how many devices can stream at the same time, and HBO Max Premium allows two screens for live sports.
- TV provider login: if you already pay for cable or a live TV service, the ESPN app and HBO Max may work with that login, at no extra cost. Check before you buy a second plan.
Frequently asked questions
Can I watch every NHL game for free?
No. Legally, the free games are the ones on over-the-air TV (ABC and the local stations listed above) and what free trials allow. Everything else needs a subscription or a TV provider login.
Does the NHL app show games live?
No. It shows scores, stats, alerts and highlights, and it tells you where each game airs.
Why is my team’s game blacked out?
Because a local channel owns that game where you are. Watch it on the local channel or the team app instead.
Where is Hockey Night in Canada?
Not on NHL games this season. Saturday NHL games are on Sportsnet as Saturday Night Hockey; the Hockey Night in Canada name now airs PWHL games on CBC.
